Founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365, the University of Vienna is one of the largest universities of Central Europe. Currently, about 92,000 students are enrolled at the University of Vienna. They can select from 187 degree programmes: 55 bachelor's programmes, 116 master's programmes, 4 diploma programmes and 12 doctoral programmes. With 9,700 employees, of whom 6,900 are academics, the University of Vienna is the largest teaching and research institution in Austria.

ECEM 2015 will be held in the historic main building of the University of Vienna. The building is located on the Universitätsring close to the Vienna City Hall ('Rathaus'; where the social dinner will take place), the Austrian parliament, and the national theatre ('Burgtheater'). The closest subway/tram stop is 'Schottentor'.

The building was designed by the architect Heinrich von Ferstel whose intention was to create a new type of building that reflected the importance of Vienna and academia.
